Lemonade Day and Me & The Bees Go to Washington

BY STEVEN GORDON, LEMONADE DAY NATIONAL PRESIDENT

Washington DC

I’ll be hopping on a plane again this week headed to Washington, D.C. to participate as a panelist for the “Briefing on Entrepreneurship Education: Ignite the Entrepreneurial Spirit!”. The briefing will be held on Feb. 26 starting at 4:00 pm at the Cannon Building on Capitol Hill. I will be joined by Lemonade Day alum, Mikaila Ulmer. Mikaila, who is now 15 years old and the founder of Me & The Bees Lemonade, is the only youth representative who was invited to serve on the panel. Mikaila participated in Lemonade Day Austin for the first time when she was four years old.

The briefing is sponsored by Congresswoman Grace Meng of the 6th District in Queens, New York. Mikaila, the other panelists and I will be discussing the importance of entrepreneurship education in public schools and youth programs to equip kids with skills that will serve them in life as business and community leaders of the future.

Additional panelists include Joe Peri, CEO of Junior Achievement New York; Corinne Hodges, CEO of Association for Women’s Business Center; and Dr. J.D. La Rock, President and CEO of Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). This briefing will be held at 122 Cannon House Office Building in Washington, D.C. from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm Eastern Standard Time and is open to the public. More information and registration information can be found here.

Congresswoman Meng and her staff introduced the 21st Century Entrepreneurship Act, H.R. 5253, back in November 2019. I was invited to contribute specific language to the Act. I appreciate the opportunity to continue working with her, her team and other legislators across the country regarding the importance of youth-run businesses and how to change outdated legislation that affects the ability of youngsters to experience financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

While in DC, we will visit other elected officials to discuss youth entrepreneurship and legislation that better supports temporary business endeavors, like lemonade stands.

Mikaila and I will also be featured on a Great Day Washington segment on Feb. 26. The show airs from 9:00 am to 10:00 am Eastern Standard Time. You can watch the live show on the Internet from the WUSA9 web site. Click on the “Watch Live” link in the upper right corner of your screen.

Join me and other Lemonade Day leaders to work with state and local governments to allow kids to host lemonade stands in their communities without permitting fees or geographic restrictions. We are here to help. We’ve even developed a Legislation Toolkit that outlines the best examples of bill language, a Lemonade Day position letter, and other items we have found useful to get positive changes in Colorado and Texas.

We are very proud of Mikaila and all our Lemonade Day participants. It’s going to be a great 2020 Lemonade Day season!
