Sharing Conversations and Entrepreneurial Lessons of Lemonade Day in 65 U.S. and Canadian Cities With Help from Lemonade Day City Directors

By Steven Gordon, President, Lemonade Day

“There are so many conversations that are straightforward when you think about a lemonade stand, but they apply apples to apples to every other business on the planet. Having a simple vocabulary about revenue, expenses and profit is really enlightening.”

Michael Holthouse, entrepreneur and founder of Lemonade Day as quoted

Thousands of conversations centered around the simplicity and power of a lemonade stand as a teaching tool will be happening in Houston this week – and those conversations will be focused on the best ways to inspire Lemonade Leaders to recruit kids in grades K through 5 to start and run their own lemonade businesses next year. How so? And why do those conversations matter?

Later this week, Lemonade Day City Directors for youth entrepreneurship from cities throughout the United States and Canada will convene in Houston for the Lemonade Day National Conference – and I could not be more pleased to have accepted the role of Host in Chief. Together, we are going to engage 75,000 kids and an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 adults in the Lemonade Day experience next year. Lemonade Day is now happening in 65 U.S. and Canadian cities. We are proud of the fact that, over the past 10 years, we have positively attracted more than 1 million youngsters to entrepreneurship.

With the involvement of parents, relatives, teachers, volunteers and others, Lemonade Day city leaders will commit their time, talent and energy to helping kids create a plan for launching, promoting, and operating their lemonade business. And these kids will implement a proven process that will enable them to “spend some, save some and share some” of their lemonade sales proceeds. Moreover, these kids are going to gain valuable social-emotional developmental assets such as leadership, maturity, confidence, interpersonal skills and many others.

Lemonade Day founder Michael Holthouse -- who, with wife Lisa encouraged their daughter Alyssa to set up a lemonade stand to raise funds when she asked for funds to buy a pet turtle – is looking forward to sharing motivational messages this week with our Lemonade Leaders. Michael and Lisa wanted Alyssa to learn some valuable lessons about owning and operating a business. And she did, including the not-so-easy lessons that a business owner must attract customers with the right product, in the right location and at the right time.  Alyssa set up her lemonade stand at the end of a quiet street and, not surprisingly, did not sell much lemonade that day!

Michael and Lisa wanted to teach Alyssa and other youngsters how to make lemons into lemonade figuratively and literally. They saw the opportunity to help Alyssa and other kids become successful, using the lemonade stand as a teaching platform and introducing the Lemonade Day concept in Houston in 2007 – just one year after Alyssa’s pursuit of a pet turtle and her lemonade sales endeavor.

“Kid Entrepreneur” Ryan Kelly will also share his back story on why he has become a big fan of Lemonade Day. Now 16, Ryan appeared on the ABC reality TV show Shark Tank when he was only 11 years old after starting his dog biscuit company with his mom Daniela. Ry’s Ruffery has increased revenue from $800 to $1.5 million – and continues to grow. He has a lot to say, and I will be listening closely!

Please check out my blog next week for Lemonade Day National Conference news updates that I know will ignite more than a few entrepreneurial sparks. Without exaggerating, we need thousands of you to get involved with Lemonade Day as ambassadors, evangelists, lemonade business owners, and lemonade buyers. I am confident that our enthusiasm for Lemonade Day will be contagious and that you will help me make a positive difference in the life of lemonade business owners -  not just for a  season, but for a lifetime. And as Michael has said, “Having a simple vocabulary about revenue, expenses and profit is really enlightening.” And oh, so refreshing!

About Lemonade Day

Established in Houston in 2007 by Michael and Lisa Holthouse, Lemonade Day is a non-profit dedicated to teaching every child across North America the business and financial skills that are the key ingredients of entrepreneurship. By learning these skills early in life, children will be better prepared to be successful, financially healthy adults. Through our fun, hands-on program Kids K-5 are empowered to start their very own business—a lemonade stand—and experience the feeling of earning real money, using 100 percent of their profit to spend, save and share based on their own goals.

Lemonade Day is in 65 cities throughout the United States and Canada. Over the past 10 years, we have served more than 1 million youth in our kid entrepreneur programs.
